[00:00:01] Welcome to our what the Word says family, to our special, special Easter program, which is the Passion. Glory to God. The passion 2025. And in the previous two days, yesterday we looked at the betrayal part two, and the day before that, we looked at the Betrayal Part one. You need to go and study those. You need to go and watch them. You need to go and listen to them. And I just would like to wish you a very, very happy Easter to each and every single one of you. This is a very, very special time. This is my hallelujah of the annual calendar where we get to look at some beautiful and powerful things that brought to us what we now have as the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And in the betrayal, what we looked at the betrayal of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, when we're looking at his Passion, the story of His Passion, the historic events of His Passion that were prophesied in the Law, they were prophesied in the prophets, they also prophesied in the Psalms. And then we have Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. That gives us the eyewitness accounts of what actually happened during the Passion of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Glory to God. And in the betrayal, what we looked at was a prophecy of what the. Of the significance of that betrayal and what needed to happen and how things happened the way they did, which was actually what we saw was a fulfillment of prophecy of what God wanted to accomplish with that whole setup of the betrayal. So the whole setup of the betrayal was God's idea. It was God's plan. And what we said in the betrayal in part one and in part two, what we actually revealed from that prophecy was that the betrayal was an integral part of the things that needed to happen so that the Lord God could actually do away with the Old Covenant and also do away with the old administration and the administrators of the old covenant. And another thing that you need to note about the betrayal is that what the prophet Zechariah revealed to us was how evil and wicked the administrators of the old AD of the Old Covenants, Hallelujah. Of the old administration had become. And if you get to see how intentional God was with that whole betrayal process, with that whole betrayal setup, you would actually begin to discover that God had actually waited for a particular time before he could come in. Hallelujah. In the flesh. He waited for the evil and the wickedness of the shepherds. And we saw Zechariah called him the three shepherds of those shepherds, which comprises of the chief priests, the scribes and the Pharisees.
[00:02:53] And the elders of the people, all right, These are the three shepherds that God wanted to dwell with that were the lead, the shepherds of the old administration, okay? So God actually had to wait. So from that time, from Malachi, where the way they call is called the.
[00:03:09] The period of silence up until Jesus is born, what God was waiting for, he was waiting for the wickedness, which would probably be actually revealed to you as something that's so enlightening that that period of silence was. Was. Was so that the evil of that administration could reach the pinnacle before Jesus actually gets born.
[00:03:32] When. When they actually had reached that level of wickedness. So that when Jesus now comes, who. The Bible says that he was anointed, all right, how he was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing, Doing good.
[00:03:48] So God had to wait for the wickedness of those three shepherds, those three, the category of the leadership of what Zechariah called the three shepherds. He waited for them, for their evil to reach the height, okay? And then he came in. Because everything good that he would do after that would be an offense to them.
[00:04:06] That will drive them to actually do all these things to the betrayal for them denying him, them accusing him falsely, them doing all these wicked and evil things that they did in even leading him to his crucifixion. So if he had come earlier, okay, they would probably would not have. Their evil would not have been so great to actually direct them and to lead them, to lead them to crucify him. So he had to wait for the right time.
[00:04:36] And Zechariah reveals to us that now, when Jesus came, that was the perfect time, because the evil of the administrators of the old covenant of the day, of Jesus's day had reached the pinnacle.
[00:04:48] So now every good act, every good deed, every good work.
[00:04:52] So that's why he would say that for, you know, please, you know, whatever your accusations are, for a good work. If you don't believe me, at least, you know, believe me for the good work sake. But he knew that they couldn't because the level of their evil had reached a height, okay? The level of their evil had reached a height. So you would see how Jesus was addressing them, how Jesus spoke to them in Matthew chapter 23, when he spoke about the seven woes. Why he spoke to them like that, because he had been waiting for them from Malachi up until Jesus is born. And the timing was perfect so that the evil, the evil, the iniquity of the scribes, the Pharisees and the elders, those in the leadership, the three shepherds. That Zechariah reveals to us that the cup of their evil needed to overflow so that everything that Jesus would now come and do would be an offense to them and it would drive them to crucify him.
[00:05:55] Okay, so now you. So you have to go and study, watch or listen to the betrayal. It's very, very enlightening. So now Luke, chapter 24. So what we look. So what we said was that the whole passion of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, according to the eyewitness accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, was the fulfillment of prophecy. Okay? These people were watching the fulfillment of prophecy from the law of Moses, the prophets and the Psalms. Let's go to Luke 24:34 before we get into our topic for the day, which is the trial. Okay, so we're going to look at the betrayal. Then we're going to look at the trial. Then we're going to look at the crucifixion, resurrection, and then the Ascension. Okay? To complete our series of the passion 2025. So Luke 24:40.
[00:06:52] And he said unto them, this is Jesus speaking. And he said unto them, these are the words.
[00:06:59] Well, we say that the Gospel are specific words. Glory to God. And now Jesus now comes and he says, these are the words. So we disclose so many beautiful things in the betrayal. You have to go and check them out. But then here, what we want to look at is now Jesus revealing to us the law of how the law of Moses, the prophets and the Psalms testify of him. Okay? So now these are Jesus words. These are the words which I spake unto you while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled. Glory to God. So what he's saying is that all the writings, the eyewitness accounts of the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John says that there are specific things that were prophesied in the law of Moses, specific things that were prophesied in the prophets and in the Psalms. Okay, so it says that which were written in the law of Moses and in the prophets and in the Psalms concerning me. Okay? And what we said in the Betrayal, part one, that the Gospel message, the Gospel of Christ is a specific message that was prophesied in the law of Moses, prophesied in the prophets and in the Psalms. But not everything that is in the law of Moses, the prophets and the Psalms is the Gospel of Christ and also the eyewitness record of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. There's a specific message. There are specific Things that were said. That's why I said these are the words. So these are specific words. Glory to God. That were prophesied that had to do with his passion. Okay?
[00:08:25] And he said that they were prophesied in the prophets, in the, in the law of Moses and in the Psalms. And now he says verse 45. Then opened he their understanding that they might understand the Scriptures and said unto them, thus it is written and thus it behoved Christ to suffer. Okay, so the betrayal, okay, the trial, all these suffering, These are the sufferings of Christ. The crucifixion, okay?
[00:08:52] So those are the things that were prophesied of him in the law of Moses, in the prophets and in the Psalms. And then it says that it behoved Christ to suffer. Hallelujah.
[00:09:02] To suffer and to rise from the dead the third day. And that repentance and remission of sin should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. Now Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are the witnesses. And then says, you are the witnesses of these things. Okay, so we have the prophets, we have the law of Moses, we have the prophets. Then we have the Psalms, and then we have the witnesses that give us the eyewitness accounts of what actually happened. Okay? And then it says, these are the words.
[00:09:36] These are the words. So there are specific words that make up the gospel. There are specific words that make up the story, the historic events that gave us the Gospel. There are specific words that were prophesied that Jesus fulfilled. Hallelujah. Says that things must be fulfilled. Says that all things must be fulfilled. All these things must be fulfilled. So there are things that happen in the passion of Christ that were things that needed to be fulfilled. And why? Because those things is what gives us today what we now call the gospel, what we now preach and declare as the Gospel. Hallelujah.
[00:10:11] Okay, so now let's get into the trial.
[00:10:14] Let's get into the trial.
[00:10:17] The trial of Jesus Christ.
[00:10:19] Today we'll be getting into the trial.
[00:10:21] And then we will, for context sake, we will read from his arrest. And then I will get into the trial of Jesus Christ. Glory to God.
[00:10:35] Okay, so let's read from John, chapter 18, from verse one to, to 11. I'll read from verse one to 11. So when Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook of Kidron, where there was a garden into which he entered and his disciples, verse 2. And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place. Okay, so Judas knew the place.
[00:11:00] For Jesus often met There with his disciples. Judas, then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. He came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Verse 4. Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth and said unto them, whom seek you? Whom do you seek? They answered him, jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said unto them, I am.
[00:11:25] Your Bible was probably saying, that's why I stopped it. I am. Why? Because it's very significant.
[00:11:30] What he said is, I am that I am. That is what he was.
[00:11:34] He was revealing also his deity.
[00:11:39] Why? Because that's one of the names that God calls himself. So he didn't say, I am he, because your he there will be in italics. Okay. He actually said, I am, which is Ehyeh. And then he says, asha ehye, I am that I am.
[00:11:55] Okay?
[00:11:57] So he says, I am.
[00:12:00] Whom do you seek? They said, jesus of Nazareth. And then he said, I am. Glory to God.
[00:12:06] Okay? And then he says, let me take that again from, from verse 4, says, Jesus, therefore, knowing all things which should come upon him, went forth and said unto them, whom do you seek? Then? Then they answered him, jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said unto him, I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them.
[00:12:25] Okay, Judas also, which betrayed him. So another prophecy of the betrayal that we probably didn't look at in the betrayal, I can give it to you now, is from Psalm 55:12. So Judas, who betrayed him, was with them.
[00:12:43] Okay, let's see. Psalm 55 from verse 12.
[00:12:48] It's another prophecy of his betrayal, says, for it was not an enemy. Now you see, the prophets and the Psalms, they give us a perspective that Matthew, Mark, Luke and John don't give us.
[00:13:06] They give us the cogitations of Jesus Christ while he was going through these things. They give us what was in Jesus's mind. They give us an account of Jesus's perspective of what he was going through, what he was thinking, how he was feeling.
[00:13:25] That is why I like to go through.
[00:13:27] When I go through the Passion of Christ like this, I like to go through also through the prophets and the Psalms and the Law, because they give us a perspective of the things that the eyewitnesses didn't know were happening inside of Jesus, mind inside of Jesus, heart inside of Jesus, thoughts.
[00:13:47] So like this one here. This is what this was, what was happening when Judas came.
[00:13:55] Remember, Judas came and then he kissed him. And then what did Jesus say? Jesus said, friend.
[00:14:01] Jesus said to him, friend. And when he said to him, friend, what was Going on in Jesus mind. He said, friend, do you betray the Son of man with a kiss?
[00:14:11] Ah. Okay, let's Read here. Psalm 55:12. For it was not an enemy that reproached me. This is going on in the heart, in the mind of Jesus.
[00:14:22] Says, then I could have borne it if it was an enemy. He says, I could have been okay with it. Okay. Says, neither was it he that hated me, that hated me, that did magnify himself against me.
[00:14:38] Then I would have hid myself from him. Says, but it was you.
[00:14:45] But it was you, a man, my equal, my guide, and my close friends. He's talking about Judas here.
[00:14:54] Says, we took sweet counsel together and walked unto the house of God in company. Oh, Judas. Okay, here's another prophecy about Judas and what he did to our Lord Jesus Christ. In Psalm 41:9. I'll give it to you.
[00:15:10] It says, yea, my own familiar friend.
[00:15:13] Remember when he says friend?
[00:15:15] Oh, yeah, yeah. When Judas showed up, Jesus said friend. Okay, now in Psalm 41:9, says, Yea, my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, who did eat of my bread, Ah.
[00:15:29] Says, has lifted up his heel against me. But you, O Lord, now this is going on. These are the cogitations of Jesus heart at his betrayal, during his betrayal, and when he's thinking about what his friend, what Judas had done to him, what Judas was doing to him. Oh, my goodness.
[00:15:48] He says, o Lord, be merciful unto me. Be merciful unto me and raise me up that I may repay them by this. I know that you favour me because my enemy does not triumph over me. Oh.
[00:16:01] And as for me, you uphold me in my integrity and set me before your face forever. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel. From everlasting to everlasting. Amen. And amen.
[00:16:14] Such pure thoughts.
[00:16:16] Hi. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:16:19] Okay, let's go back to John, chapter 18. I'm back at verse six. Okay, so it says, whom do you see? Jesus of Nazareth. I just wanted to give you the horn for what Jesus was. What was going on in the mind of Jesus when Judas came to him and kissed him.
[00:16:33] Says, it was not an enemy that did, it was a friend.
[00:16:37] Okay. Verse 6 says, as soon as he had said unto them, I am, says, they went backward and fell to the ground. They went backward and felt what knocked them, what knocked them? And we said that those were a couple of a lot of soldiers. This is not just two or three or four, maybe just 10 soldiers.
[00:16:59] This was a whole company of soldiers that they sent to arrest Jesus.
[00:17:04] Okay.
[00:17:06] All right, let's Continue. Says they asked them again, whom seek you? And they said, jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I told you that I am, if therefore you seek. So he waited for them after they got knocked under the power.
[00:17:22] He waited for them to get up. And then after they'd gotten up, they said, what happened here? Then he says, okay, so like I was saying before, whom do you seek? Whom are you seeking? Whom do you seek here?
[00:17:34] Okay.
[00:17:36] All right. And this is, if therefore you seek me says, let these go their way, verse nine. That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spoke of them.
[00:17:45] Which he spoke of them which you gave me. Have I lost none? What is he talking about? So Jesus here says, okay, let me read that again so you can catch what the construction means in verse nine. Says that the saying might be fulfilled, which he spoke. So he's saying that he spoke a word. He prophesied what was going to happen. And then he says, so Jesus prophesied of what should happen. And then some moments later, the word of prophecy which he prophesied about himself came to pass.
[00:18:19] What was that word? He spoke that while he was praying in John 17:12, which we looked at in the betrayal part two.
[00:18:27] Okay. Where he says that I have lost none.
[00:18:30] Says, but the Son of perdition says that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
[00:18:34] So he said that I didn't lose that one. Why? Because there were certain things that had already been written concerning Judas. Okay, let's move on.
[00:18:42] Okay, so Jesus prophesied, and then you fulfilled his own prophecy soon afterward.
[00:18:48] You gotta love Jesus so you can prophesy about your life. And then you can go and you can fulfill that prophecy.
[00:18:54] And when did he prophesy about that prophecy? In John 17:12. Okay. Verse 12. I'll read it for you. Says, while I was with them in the world, I kept them in your name. Those that you gave me, I have kept. And none of them is lost but the Son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. So here in verse nine, where he says that the saying might be fulfilled, which he spoke of them which you gave me, I have lost none. So Jesus prophesied, and after he prophesied, he went and he fulfilled the prophecy shortly afterwards. You got to love Jesus, okay?
[00:19:27] John 18:10. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant and cut off the right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Okay? Then said Jesus unto Peter, put up your sword into the sheath the cup which my Father has given me. Shall I not drink it? Then the band and the Captain. And the officers of the Jews took Jesus and bound him. They chained him, okay? They chained him. And while they chained him, go to Matthew 26:55,56. After they just changed him. And now they were leading him. They were leading him away to the council, the multitude. Now we're looking at him. And then Jesus addressed the multitude. Matthew 26:55, 56. I'll read from verse 55.
[00:20:15] Okay, so in that same hour, said Jesus to the multitude, that same hour, okay, that they are of his arrest, says, are you come out against a thief with swords and clubs to take me? Says, I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you laid no hold on me. But all this was done that the scripture of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him and fled.
[00:20:42] Hallelujah. All the disciples forsook him and fled. And what prophecy does that fulfill?
[00:20:49] It fulfills the prophecy where it says, strike the shepherd and the sheep shall be scattered.
[00:20:55] Strike the shepherd and the sheep shall be scattered. Okay, so now. So that's the arrest. And then in the same hour of his arrest, he addressed the multitude. And then the Bible says that all his disciples forsook him and fled. Okay?
[00:21:09] All his disciples forsook him and fled so that the scripture might be fulfilled. Strike the shepherd and the sheep shall be scattered. Okay? And that was fulfilled there. So now the trial of Jesus was by three authority bodies that we're going to look at. So I've decided. I've divided them for them into three, okay? So you have two of which are the authority bodies that were over the people. So the two authority bodies in Jesus's day that were over the people were the religious authority, okay? And then that was the first one, and then the second one. So those are the ones that we're going to look at that the. The Gospel, the eyewitness accounts of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John give us. So there's the religious authority, then there's the political authorities, all right, which is the Roman political authorities. And then the third one, interesting that the Bible gives us is the authority of the people, the authority of the people of the nation of Israel themselves.
[00:22:05] So these are the people that put Jesus in trial. They tried Jesus.
[00:22:10] The religious authority tried Jesus, and they said that, you know, he must die.
[00:22:18] The Roman political leaders, one of them actually said, okay, I'm going to give him to you so that you may crucify. So subsequently, he agreed to their demands to have him crucified. So he also participated in the trial that gave the verdict for his crucifixion. Okay.
[00:22:36] And then we have also the people themselves. Okay? So all these groupings of authority were involved in the trial of Jesus. And we're going to look into them as we get along. So the Jewish religious authority. So you have. Now the one that presided over the Jewish religious authority was the high priest, which was Cephas. So Cephas was the high priest. He presided over the council, or the Sanhedrin, comprising of chief priests, scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees. Right? And elders. Okay? So these ones, these. This body of religious authority is dealing with what Zechariah called the three shepherds. Okay? Those are the three shepherds. Okay.
[00:23:20] And then two. So the number one is the religious authority. This number two is the Roman political authority. So the Roman political authority comprised of Pontius Pilate, who was the Roman prefect, the governor. The Roman governor of Judea.
[00:23:35] Okay. And then also Herod Antipas. Okay. Herod Antipas is also documented. Also, I think it's in the Gospel of Luke, where Herod is also documented to have participated in this trial. Okay?
[00:23:48] So Pilate sent Jesus to Herod for questioning since Jesus was from Galilee, but Herod returned him without a verdict.
[00:23:57] Okay? And then Pilate was like, okay, let the people try him. And then the people said, you know, they did what they did.
[00:24:05] Okay, so now let's look at Jesus before the religious authority. Let's look at Jesus before the religious authority. So we're going to look at Matthew's account. Glory to God. Matthew, chapter 26. I'm going to be reading from verse 57 to verse 68. Okay.
[00:24:21] All right. From verse 57.
[00:24:23] And they that laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas, the high priest. Okay? So now they brought him to be tried by the religious authority. Okay. By Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
[00:24:38] Okay? The chief priests, the scribes, Pharisees and Sadducees, and the elders, the three shepherds, remember, from Zechariah, they were all assembled. Now, they found what you call what, the Sanhedrin, all right? And it says, but Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's place and went in and sat with the servants to see the end. Peter followed from afar off.
[00:25:00] Okay? That's also fulfillment of prophecy.
[00:25:04] Okay? That's the psalmist prophecy. All right? From Psalm 38, from verse 11 to 15. Let's read it. My lovers and my friends, they stand aloof from my plague, and my kinsmen stand afar Off.
[00:25:18] Okay, so Jesus is arrested.
[00:25:21] He's arrested and is brought before the council.
[00:25:25] All right, and in his heart, what is Jesus saying? He's saying he's calling his disciples my lovers and my friends.
[00:25:34] So in his heart, this is what he's thinking. And he's watching.
[00:25:38] So because Peter snuck in and he's watching from afar off. They were all. Because, remember, all his disciples forsook him and fled. And then Peter was one of them that followed and was watching from a distance from afar off that the scripture. And the scripture was being fulfilled. Yeah, the scripture was being fulfilled. As Peter was. As Peter was there and he was setting and he went and he sat inside and he was watching from a distance.
[00:26:03] So it's the fulfillment of this prophecy of the psalmist here in Psalm 38, okay? Says, and my kinsmen stand afar off. They also that seek after my life lay snares for me. Now he's talking about those guys, the elders and the leaders of the people says, they set snares for me, and they that seek. And they that seek after my life lay snares for me. And they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things.
[00:26:34] This is going on in the mind of Jesus and plant deceits all the day long. But I, as a deaf man, heard not.
[00:26:45] He says I acted like I didn't hear. Says, as a deaf man, all these things that they were doing, says, I heard them, not. Says, and I was as a dumb man that opens not his mouth. Says, he opened not his mouth, okay? And it says thus, I was as the man that hears not and whose mouth are no reproofs. For in you, O Lord, do I hope you will hear what. Oh, Lord, my God, Amen. These are the cogitations of Jesus while they're leading him into the before the council.
[00:27:21] So that's a prophecy that was fulfilled there that we see here in Matthew. Okay. Okay, let's go to verse 59, Matthew. All right, now, the chief priests and the elders and all the council sought false witness against Jesus. They sought forth witness against Jesus.
[00:27:37] Why? Because they couldn't sentence him. Because the Bible says, at the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established, shall every matter be what judged. Okay. All right. So now they sought false witnesses, okay? So because these people, they knew the law, okay? So they wanted to. They orchestrated all these things so that they could get rid of Jesus, okay, But found none. They sought false witnesses so that they can put him to death, but they found none. This is verse 60. Though many false witnesses Came many false witnesses. Came Many false witnesses came. Yet found they none at the last came two false two.
[00:28:21] So they put this thing together until they could find two.
[00:28:27] So two false witnesses and said, this fellow said, I'm able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.
[00:28:37] Yeah. And the high priest arose and said unto them, answer you nothing.
[00:28:42] Answer you nothing. What is it which these witness against you? But Jesus held his peace, confirming this prophecy. Psalm 38, okay, from verse 13, says, But I as a deaf man, heard not. And I was as a dumb man that opens not his mouth. Thus I was as a man that hears not and whose mouth are no reproofs. For in you, O Lord, do I hope you will hear, O Lord my God. So he says, what is it which these witness against you? Verse 63. But Jesus held his peace, and the scripture was fulfilled. The prophecy was fulfilled. Okay, I'll give you another prophecy. This is a prophecy from Isaiah's prophecy of Jesus silence against his false accusation. Isaiah 53, 7. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth.
[00:29:37] He did not open his mouth, okay? He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. Verse 63, Matthew 27:63. But Jesus held his peace.
[00:29:55] Okay?
[00:29:57] And then the prophecy, the psalmist prophecy of the false witnesses. Psalm 35 from verse 11 to 12, verse 11, false witnesses did rise up. They laid to my charge things that I knew not.
[00:30:11] They rewarded me evil for good.
[00:30:14] To the sorrow of my soul.
[00:30:17] To the sorrow of my soul. How touching.
[00:30:20] How touching.
[00:30:24] Okay, so we're still in verse 63. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adore you. By the living God, that you tell us whether you be the Christ, the Son of God.
[00:30:37] This is the only time Jesus would respond. Okay?
[00:30:40] Verse 64, Jesus said unto him, you have said so.
[00:30:44] You have said so. Nevertheless, I say unto you, hereafter shall you see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming in the clouds of heaven.
[00:30:54] Okay? So when it came to his identity, when they questioned his identity, that's when he opened up his mouth, say, okay. No.
[00:31:02] So you say, okay, you say so. All right, so he never denied who he was. He never denied who he was.
[00:31:11] Okay? And he never denied certain things that pertain to his identity.
[00:31:17] So when he says, so from that time, whom do you seek? He said, I am. He was revealing his identity. Oh, glory. Okay? And every time the members of the council whether the political leaders, they asked him, who are you? They questioned his identity. He always responded, says, he thought it not robbery to be equal with God. He thought it not robbery to be equal with God. Ayah says, but he humbled himself. He thought it not robbery.
[00:31:47] This is him thinking it not robbery to be equal with God.
[00:31:54] Says, before Abraham was I am. Before Abraham was I am. He thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but he humbled himself and became obedient unto death. It says, wherefore God also has highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow.
[00:32:15] Okay, where are we now?
[00:32:19] Then the high priest. So he says, are you going to see me coming from the clouds of heaven?
[00:32:26] Then the high priest tore his clothes. Remember what it said in the law regarding the high priest, that he should not. He should never rent his clothes. So when the high priest tears his garments like this, then that means that something crazy has happened. Okay? Because this was not supposed to happen.
[00:32:43] Okay, so this was the height of the displeasure of the most senior authority, religious authority in the land.
[00:32:52] So by the time he rents his garments. That's a statement.
[00:32:57] That's a serious statement.
[00:32:59] Okay.
[00:33:01] All right.
[00:33:02] Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, he has spoken blasphemy.
[00:33:07] He has spoken blasphemy. What further need have we of witness? Behold, now you have heard his blasphemy, verse 66. What think you? They answered and said, he is guilty of death.
[00:33:19] He is guilty of death.
[00:33:21] They then did they spit in his face?
[00:33:26] Then did they spit in his face and befitted him. And others struck him with their palms. They struck Jesus with their palms.
[00:33:37] Imagine striking the Son of God with your palms. Oh, dear God. Okay, and then they started. This is now the fulfillment of the prophecy of people mocking him and beating him. Okay, we'll look at that prophecy there from Isaiah. Okay, so it says, then did they spit in his face and befitted him. And others struck him with the palms of their hands, saying, prophesy unto us, you, Christ, who is he that struck you? Oh, goodness, can you imagine?
[00:34:17] So, so let's go to the fulfillment of this. Let's go to the prophecy, Isaiah's prophecy of Jesus being mocked and being beaten. Isaiah 50 from verse. I'll read from verse 4 to 10 if we can go through it quickly.
[00:34:32] Okay, so now you know, another account of those things that were going on in the heart and in the mind. That perspective, from Jesus's perspective, when all these Things were happening. Okay, so the prophets and the psalms, they give us those perspectives of what was going on in the mind and in the heart of Jesus.
[00:34:56] Okay. The Lord God has given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary. He awakens morning. By morning he awakens my ear to hear as the learned. Verse 5, Isaiah, chapter 55.
[00:35:13] The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned backward. Verse 6. I gave my back to the smiters. I gave my back to the smiters. Oh, my goodness.
[00:35:26] And my cheeks. To them that plucked out the beard. I gave my cheeks.
[00:35:30] He's talking about them now. Beating him, striking him.
[00:35:34] Says, for the Lord God will help me, therefore shall I not be confounded. Therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. He is near that justifies me. Who will contend with me? Let us stand together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me.
[00:35:51] Behold the Lord. God will help me.
[00:35:54] This is the Lord.
[00:35:57] Behold the Lord. God will help me. Who is he that shall condemn me? Lo, they shall all grow old as garments, and the moth shall eat them up.
[00:36:07] Who is among you that fears the Lord, that obey the voice of his servant, that walks in darkness and has no light, let him trust in the name of the Lord and rely upon his God.
[00:36:21] Okay, let's look at Luke's account of Jesus's mocking and beating. Luke, chapter 22.
[00:36:27] Luke, chapter 22. I'll read from verse 63 to 65.
[00:36:31] Verse 63.
[00:36:33] And the men that held Jesus mocked him.
[00:36:36] They mocked him and they struck him. They started to beat him. Yeah, they started to lash him. And when they had blindfolded him, they blind. They blindfolded Jesus.
[00:36:49] They struck him on the face and asked him, saying, prophesy, who is he that struck you? They blindfolded him. And. Oh, and many other things. Blasphemously spoke they against him.
[00:37:05] Many other things.
[00:37:06] Okay, let's go to the psalmist prophecy of Jesus being mocked. I'll read from verse 22.
[00:37:12] Six, eight says, but I am a worm and no man, a reproach of men, and despise of the people all. They that see me love me to scorn. They shoot out the lip. They shake their head, saying, he trusted in the Lord that he would deliver him. Let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. How wicked.
[00:37:35] Okay, let's look at Mark's account of the mocking and the beating and how they spat at him. Verse 65 says. And some began to spit on him.
[00:37:47] Some began to. These are the multitudes. Remember. Remember I told you that the trial of Jesus involved three groups of people. The religious leaders, okay.
[00:37:57] Then the Roman political leaders and then the people.
[00:38:03] Terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible.
[00:38:08] And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to befit him, and to say unto him prophesy. And the gods did strike him with the palm of their hands.
[00:38:23] That is.
[00:38:25] That is what Mark said they did to him to fulfill the scripture of the psalmist and of Isaiah of those that beat him and mocked him.
[00:38:39] Okay, okay. Mark's account. Can we take a look at Mark's account of Jesus before the council?
[00:38:51] Mark, chapter 14 from verse 53 to 65.
[00:38:58] And they led Jesus away to the high priest. They led Jesus away to the high priest. Glory to God. And with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. Verse 54. And Peter followed him afar off. Remember that this is prophecy being fulfilled even into the courtyard of the high priest and sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire. This is Peter and the chief priests. And all the council sought for a witness against Jesus to put him to death. And they found none. They sought witnesses and they found none.
[00:39:30] Okay. For many bore false witness against him.
[00:39:34] Many bore false witness against him. But their witness agreed not together. Their witness agreed not together to prove that he was an innocent person. He was innocent.
[00:39:45] Verse 57. And they arose some and. And bore false witness against him, saying. We heard him say, I will destroy the temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build it. I'll build another. Another maid with. I'll build another maid without hands.
[00:40:01] But neither did their witness agree together.
[00:40:05] Okay. Another psalmist prophecy of false witnesses is Psalm 27:12 14 says, Deliver me not over unto the will of my enemies, for false witnesses are risen up against me. Oh, this is Jesus. False witnesses are risen up against me. And such as breathe out cruelty, says. They breathe out cruelty. Such as breathe out cruelty, says, I would have fainted unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord. Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart. Wait, I say, on the Lord. Oh, thank you, Lord Jesus.
[00:40:42] So even in that moment of distress, these were the cogitations of Jesus. These were the. This was the mind. This is what is going on in the heart of Jesus. These words were the ones that were, oh, how beautiful.
[00:40:55] Oh, how beautiful.
[00:40:57] Okay, so we're still on Mark's account of Jesus before the Jesus before the council.
[00:41:06] All right. And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus saying, answer you nothing. What is it which these witnesses say against you? But he held his peace fulfilling prophecy. He held his peace and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him and said unto him, are you the Christ?
[00:41:22] They knew.
[00:41:24] They said, are you the Christ?
[00:41:27] So the high priest, are you the Christ, the Son of the Son of the blessed? Verse 62. And Jesus said, I. Ah.
[00:41:39] Jesus said, I am Kayaba.
[00:41:43] Oh, glory to God.
[00:41:44] And it says, and you shall see the Son of Man sitting in the right hand of power and coming in the clouds of heaven.
[00:41:53] The high priest asked, are youe the Son of God? And Jesus replied and said, I am. And you shall see the Son of man. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. At the right hand of power. Oh, glory.
[00:42:05] And coming in the clouds of heaven. Coming in the clouds of heaven.
[00:42:10] Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, what need have we any further witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy.
[00:42:18] What think you? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. They all condemned him. All of them in the council.
[00:42:24] All of them in the council condemned him. They condemned Jesus to be guilty of death. And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to befit him and to say unto him, prophesy unto us. And the gods did strike him with the palms of their hands. Let's look at Luke's account. Okay, Luke's account of Jesus before the council. This is the trial. Okay, so this is the religious authority trying Jesus.
[00:42:49] And this is from Luke's account, Luke 22. From verse 66. I'll read all the way to verse 71. It says, and as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together and led him into their council, saying, are you the Christ? Tell us. And he said unto them, if I tell you, you will not believe.
[00:43:08] If I tell you, you will not believe.
[00:43:13] And if I also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go. Hereafter shall the Son of Man sit on the right hand of the power of God. Then said they, then say, they all, are you then the Son of God? And he said unto them, you say that I am. You say that I am.
[00:43:31] And they said, what? Need we any further witness? For we ourselves have heard his own mouth.
[00:43:38] Okay, do we have time to go through John's account of this?
[00:43:44] John's account?
[00:43:45] Yeah, I think we can do John's account. Glory to God.
[00:43:50] Okay, so this is Jesus before Cafe is the high priest.
[00:43:55] All right, this is John's account.
[00:43:58] I read from John 18, from verse 19.
[00:44:01] And we're going to go all the way to 24, says the high priest. Then asked Jesus his disciples and of his doctrine, Jesus answered him. I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple where the Jews always met. This is Jesus talking to Caiaphas. Okay, the high priest, okay, says, where the Jews always met and in secret. Have I said nothing? Why do you ask me? Ask them who heard me what I have said unto them. Behold, they know what I said.
[00:44:31] And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers stood by and struck Jesus with the palm of his hand. Oh my goodness.
[00:44:39] Saying, answer you, the high priest. So Jesus answered him, if I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil. Say, speak the evil that I've said.
[00:44:49] But if, well, why are you striking me?
[00:44:54] Oh my goodness says, why are you striking? If I've spoken, if I have spoken out of place, then tell me what I've said that is out of place.
[00:45:04] And if not, why are you striking me?
[00:45:08] Says now Anas had, had sent him bound unto Caiphas, the high priest. Okay, so that is John's account. Okay, so before we get into the Roman political authorities account accounts of the trial, let's look at Peter's denial of Jesus. Should we look at Peter's denial of Jesus from Mark or should we look at it from Matthew?
[00:45:38] Okay, so what we'll do is we'll look at Peter's denial of Jesus from Mark and then from Matthew we'll pick something else to look at, maybe Judas suicide. Okay, so let's look at Peter's denial of Jesus. Mark 14:64 to 72. So all these things that was, that was Jesus being tried by the religious authorities. Caiphas, the high priest and the elders, the scribes, the Pharisees, Sadducees, and the whole and the council. Okay, these are the religious leaders of the nation of Israel at the day which the prophet Zechariah revealed to us were the three shepherds that shall be cut off in one month.
[00:46:24] Okay, let's look at Peter's denial of Jesus.
[00:46:31] Mark 14:66.
[00:46:33] And as Peter was below in the courtyard, there came one of the maidservants of the high priest, the maidservants of the high Priest. And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him and, and said, and you also were with Jesus of Nazareth.
[00:46:48] But he denied saying I know not. Neither understand what you say, Peter, remember, I will die with you. Jesus. Remember, Peter, he says, though some people will deny you, I will not even deny you.
[00:47:11] I will go to the death. I will die with you.
[00:47:16] Okay? It says verse 68. But he denied saying, I know not, neither understand what you say.
[00:47:23] And he went out into the porch and the cock crowed, okay? And the maidservant saw him again. This is the. This was the first time the cock crowed the first one, okay? And the maidservant saw him again and began to say to them that stood by, this is one of them.
[00:47:40] And he denied it again.
[00:47:43] And after a little while, they that stood by said again to Peter. So he denied. This is the second time. This is the second denial, okay?
[00:47:52] All right.
[00:47:54] And he denied it again. And a little while they that stood by said again to Peter, surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean, and your spirit speech agrees with it. Verse 71. But he began to curse and to swear.
[00:48:08] Peter began to curse and to swear, oh, my goodness. Saying, I know not this man whom you speak. I do not know him. I know not this man of whom you speak.
[00:48:20] And the second time the cock crowed, and Peter called to mind.
[00:48:26] And Peter called to mind the word, the word that Jesus said unto him, before the cock crows twice, you shall deny me three times.
[00:48:38] And when he thought on this, he wept.
[00:48:43] He wept because all those things that Jesus said fulfilled. But Jesus said, but I have prayed for you that your faint fail not. Hallelujah says, I've prayed for you. And it says, and when you have. When you have recovered, Hallelujah. When you have recovered, strengthen your brethren.
[00:49:02] Oh, glory. So Peter was saved by that.
[00:49:05] Okay, so now that is Peter's denial of Jesus. And we looked at the trial of Jesus with the religious leaders. So now Jesus. This is now Jesus before the political leaders. So we said that there was the religious leaders, there was the political leaders, and then he was also tried by the nation of Israel, the people of Israel. Okay, so these are the three groups of authorities, the authorities of the people that tried Jesus and condemned him to die.
[00:49:37] Okay, so now let's start with Luke's account, because Luke's account also is the one that gives us the detail, gives us the details of Herod's involvement. There's the other gospels don't give us a detail. So let's go for with Luke's account, and then with Luke's account, we will get into the other accounts of Jesus before the political authorities being tried by the political authorities. So Luke 23, I'll read from. Verse 1. Says, and the whole multitude of them arose and led him unto Pilate. So the whole multitude was also there. So the soldiers of the chief priests were also there.
[00:50:17] So.
[00:50:18] Hey, hey.
[00:50:21] So everyone was involved in this.
[00:50:24] Everyone was involved. The people that he preached to, the people that he taught in the synagogue, all the people that he taught in the synagogue, some of the people that he healed, they were all involved in this.
[00:50:36] The whole multitude.
[00:50:39] Remember the other day he fed 5,000 of them, and at different times, he fed a multitude of another 5,000. The Bible says the men and women not counted. Now, these are the same people.
[00:50:54] Verse 2. And they began to accuse him, saying, we found this fellow perverting the nation and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he must. Now you see. So now the accusation is that the accusation was that of sedition because they were saying that Jesus is a threat.
[00:51:13] He's a threat to Rome.
[00:51:16] So that's the accusation that the religious leaders and the people brought before who? Before the governor, okay?
[00:51:27] That this guy is a threat to Caesar.
[00:51:32] Okay?
[00:51:34] And now they are accusing him falsely, saying that he says that we must not pay tribute to Caesar, we must not pay taxes to Caesar.
[00:51:42] But he didn't say that. What did he say? He says, give unto Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give unto God what belongs to God. And now they are accusing him falsely and saying that he told us that we should not pay our taxes to Caesar.
[00:51:56] How evil.
[00:51:58] Evil. Evil, evil. Says, we found this fellow perverting the nation and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ, a king.
[00:52:08] And Pilate, now he's before they brought him before Pontius Pilate. This is Luke's account. And Pilate asked him, saying, are you the king of the Jews? And he answered him and said, you say it. He didn't deny it. He said, you say it. Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
[00:52:28] And they were all the more.
[00:52:31] And they were. And they were the more urgent. Saying, he stirs up the people teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.
[00:52:40] When Pilate heard of Galilee, all right, he asked whether the men were Galilean.
[00:52:47] And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod. So now this is the only account that the Gospels give us that say that Pilate sent him to Herod and then Herod sent him back to Pilate. Okay, so now let's finish that one. So that's why we chose to go with this one first.
[00:53:06] And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself was also was at Jerusalem at the time. Verse 8. And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad, all right? For he was desirous to see him for a long time. He had heard about Jesus, so he was very happy to see Jesus, like, oh, finally I get to meet this guy.
[00:53:31] Okay? But the occasion. I don't think it was the occasion that he wanted.
[00:53:36] Okay, let's see.
[00:53:37] All right. And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad, for he was so desirous to see him for a long time because he had heard many things about him and he had hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. So he wanted to have an encounter with Jesus. But the occasion that time was over. This was no longer the occasion.
[00:53:56] Okay, Verse nine. Then he questioned him with many words, but he answered him nothing. And the chief priests and the scribes stood and vehemently accused him. And Herod, with his men of war, despised him.
[00:54:10] And they mocked him and arrayed him in a. In a gorgeous robe and sent him again to Pilate. So they sent him back, okay? They sent him back to Pilate.
[00:54:20] And the same day, Pilate and Herod were made friends together. For before, they were at enmity between themselves. So now after this whole interaction, they became friends, okay? So they had something to talk about. They had something. They had a common. That they had an issue in common, you know?
[00:54:38] Okay. And parted when he had called together the Chief priests.
[00:54:42] Verse 13. And Pilate, when he called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people. The chief priests, the rulers and the people. The people.
[00:54:54] That's why I said the people were also involved in the trial.
[00:54:59] So it was the religious leaders and the chief priests and the people.
[00:55:11] And then now the political.
[00:55:14] The political authorities were now involved in this thing, in the trial of Jesus, okay? And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priority priests and the rulers and the people. The people, I want you to know that the people were involved, said unto them, verse 14, you have brought this man unto me as one that perverts. As one that perverts the people. And behold, I have examined him before you, and I found no fault in this man concerning those things of which you accuse him, says, I find no fault.
[00:55:51] That means that he was sentenced without fault. So this is key. Why? Because they made him God made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. So now Pilate is like, I find no fault in him. Herod was like, I don't. There's no fault in him.
[00:56:10] So who had fought with him?
[00:56:13] The false accusers.
[00:56:17] Okay, says, I have examined him before you, and I found no fault in this man concerning those things which you accuse him. Verse 15. No, no. Yet, Herod, for I sent you to him. And lo, nothing worthy of death was done by nothing worthy of death.
[00:56:34] He was faultless.
[00:56:36] Verse 16. I will therefore chastise him and release him. I'll just beaten. He was lashed even that foolishness.
[00:56:48] Why would you do that, Pilate?
[00:56:50] Wicked man.
[00:56:52] Okay, so even as wicked as he was, he said, I find no fault with this man. Verse 17.
[00:56:59] For of necessity, he must release one unto them at the feast. So he says, I'm gonna give him lashes and then I'm going to release him because there's no fault. I can't arrest him. I can't sentence him. Okay, now we can go to Matthew's account.
[00:57:15] But with Matthew's account, I think it will take us into the suicide of Judas after he now realized what he had done.
[00:57:25] Okay, verse 27, Matthew 27:1 says, when the morning was come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. They took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
[00:57:38] And when they had bound him, they led him away and delivered him to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
[00:57:45] Okay, so now those are the religious leaders. When they. When they're done with him at the council now, they took him to Pontius Pilate. This is according to Matthew.
[00:57:55] Okay, now let's look at Judas. Suicide, verse three. Then Judas, who had betrayed him, Judas, who had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented and brought again the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. He repented and he brought this. He says, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the. I have betrayed the innocent blood.
[00:58:18] So even the chief priests and the elders and the elders of the people, they also heard from Judas himself, saying that this is innocent blood.
[00:58:31] Innocent blood says, I've betrayed innocent blood. And they said, what is it that. What is that? Look at the wickedness. Says, what is that to us?
[00:58:42] See yourself to that. See yourself to that. And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed and went and hanged himself.
[00:58:51] Judas.
[00:58:53] Ay yai yai, Judas.
[00:58:56] Ah, Judas.
[00:58:58] Okay, verse six. And the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, it is not lawful to put them into the treasury because it is the price of blood.
[00:59:09] It is the price they even knew, remember Zechariah's prophecy. So it is the price of blood.
[00:59:16] Okay, Verse seven. And they took counsel and brought and bought with them the potter's field to bury strangers. To bury strangers. In verse 8, therefore that field was called the field of blood unto this day. The field of blood unto this day. Verse 9. Thus was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying they took the 30 pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they, they of the children of Israel did value, and gave them for the potter's field in the Lord's appoint as the Lord appointed me. Now, Matthew, here, now there's an issue here because this, he says Jeremy or Jeremiah.
[00:59:58] Okay, but, but it's not Jeremiah that said there's prophecy. This is a fulfillment of the prophecy from Zechariah that we looked at in the betrayal. So why did they, why did this? Why is Jeremiah here?
[01:00:15] Okay, why is Jeremiah here?
[01:00:18] So the words that were quoted here were found in Zechariah. We did the prophecy of the betrayer in Zechariah, and it's not in Jeremiah. So now the issue here, so many, you know, so many conjectures, you know, there have been.
[01:00:35] Have been formed in order to try and, you know, reconcile this discrepancy as to why is it Jeremiah there. But then Jeremiah never said this, you know, and actually it was Zechariah. So what scholars and people that really verify these ancient texts and these ancient documents, these writings, the people that actually study these writings, all right, they, they actually. To try and reconcile, like how did this document actually write Jeremiah there? Okay, so what they found out is that the original, the person that originally wrote, okay, the, the Gospel of Matthew, right, the original one, the first one, the initial one, did not include the name of the prophet.
[01:01:26] Okay, so, so it was one of. So what, what would have happened is that one of the people, a copier, right, that was making a copy of the original, all right, is the one that wrote Jeremiah there. Okay, so, so that, so it's not a big issue, right? It's not really a big issue. So one of the copyists, all right, is the one that actually put Jeremiah there.
[01:01:52] Okay? Because when you now look, so now what they saw is that. So when, when you come up with an issue like this, what they do is that they look at the, the, the rest of the, of the documents, or they look at other copies of the document. So there's only a. There's other copies of this account of the Gospel. They omitted the name of the prophet.
[01:02:16] Okay, they omitted the name of the prophet. Prophet. So what they will say that there are two manuscripts of the 12th century, the Syriac and the Letter, the Persic, two of. Two of the Itala and in some other Latin copies. And what renders it highly probable that the original reading was. Did not include.
[01:02:39] Did not include the name of the prophet. All right, Is that Matthew?
[01:02:45] When you look now at the rest of the writings of Matthew, every time that he was quoting a prophet, he never included the name. He never included the name of the prophet, except for this one time. So that would mean that why would he now suddenly now want to include the name of the prophet when prior to this, like, how many times did he write, make reference to a prophecy to a prophet?
[01:03:07] What?
[01:03:09] Four times prior to this, he made reference to a prophecy from a prophet, but he never mentioned the name of the prophet. So now here he comes, and it is Jeremiah, but it's not Jeremiah, but it's actually from Zechariah. So now what they concluded was that it was one of the copyists, one of the copyists that actually added it because there are other manuscripts, and including, they said one of the Latin manuscripts, they do not include that name of the prophet. Okay, so now just to clarify that, okay, glory to God. So now that is the prophecy of. From Zechariah, chapter 11, verse 12 to 13. We looked at that, okay, about the 12, 30 pieces of silver. Let me read it unto you from verse 12. And I said unto them, if you think good, give me my price, and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price 30 pieces of silver, okay? And the Lord said unto me, cast it unto the potter. Cast it unto. So this is the fulfillment of prophecy here that is happening in Matthew from.
[01:04:09] In Matthew, chapter 27, from verse, from verse 7. And they took counsel and bought the men, bought them the potter's field to bury strangers in verse 8. Therefore the field was called the field of blood unto this day. So now everything is happening according to the potential prophecy of Zechariah here to set up these three shepherds, okay? The chief priests, the scribes, the Pharisees and the elders, okay, that were the shepherds at the time.
[01:04:50] Okay, let's move. Let's move in. Let's finish this one.
[01:04:53] Okay, so now that is now Judas suicide. Now let's go to Jesus before the council.
[01:05:06] According to the Gospel of Matthew, it says verse 11, chapter 27, verse 11. And Jesus stood before the governor. This is Pontius Pilate.
[01:05:17] And the governor asked him, saying, are you the king of the Jews?
[01:05:20] And Jesus said unto him, you say so. And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing and said. Then said Pilate unto him, hear you not?
[01:05:33] Hear you not how many things they witness against you? And he answered him, never a word. So that the governor marveled greatly. So Jesus here, according to the Gospel of Matthew, when he was before Pontius Pilate, he did not answer back. So sometimes he just, you know, held his peace. Okay, let's look at Mark's account of Jesus before the political authorities.
[01:06:00] Mark 15:1.
[01:06:04] Okay. And immediately in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and the scribes and the whole council and. And bound Jesus and carried him away and delivered him to Pilate. And Pilate asked him, are you the king of the Jews?
[01:06:19] And he answering, said unto him, you say it.
[01:06:23] And the chief priests accused him of many things, but he answered nothing. Okay. And Pilate asked him again, saying, answer you nothing. Behold how many things they witness against you. But Jesus answered nothing. So Pilate marveled. Pilate marveled. So every time Pilate would ask him about his identity, would respond, but every time they now made accusations against him, those false accusations with. From. With those false witnesses, he didn't respond. And the Bible says Pontius Pilate marveled.
[01:06:55] Pontius Pilate marveled at this.
[01:06:58] Okay, all right. That is Mark's account.
[01:07:03] Can we look at John's account of Jesus before Pontius Pilate? Okay, this is a. Yeah, because there's a lot of back and forth that happened. There's a dialogue that happens here that will be good for you. You will enjoy it.
[01:07:14] Okay, so John, chapter 18. I'm reading from verse 28. Okay. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas, that's the high priest, unto the hall of judgment. And it was early. All right. And it was early. And they themselves went not into. Into the judgment hall. They didn't go into the judgment hall of Pontius Pilate. Okay.
[01:07:34] Lest they should be defiled. Okay, so let they should be defiled, right? But that they might eat the Passover. Verse 29. Pilate then went out to them and said, what accusation bring you against this man? Verse 30. They answered and said unto him, if he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to you.
[01:07:55] Then said Pilate unto them, take him and judge him according to Your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, it is not lawful for us to put any man to death that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.
[01:08:10] Then Pilate entered into the temple of judgment hall, into the. Into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus and said unto him, are you the king of the Jews? And Jesus answered him, and saying, you say you this thing of yourself, or do the others tell you?
[01:08:28] Do the others tell it to you of me? Say you this of yourself, or do the others tell it you of me? Verse 35, Pilate answered, Am I a Jew?
[01:08:36] Your own nation and the chief priest, your own nation. Remember, don't forget that your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you unto me. That's why I said, even the people were involved in this trial. Even the people were involved in this false accusation against Jesus.
[01:08:55] Even the nation. He says, your own nation, your own people were involved in this false accusation of Jesus.
[01:09:02] Okay, okay. From verse 32, that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die. Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again and called Jesus and said unto him, are you the king of the Jews? Jesus answered him, saying, say you this thing of yourself, or do others tell it to you of me? Pilate answered, am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you unto me. What have you done? Verse 36, Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world.
[01:09:34] My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight that I should not be delivered to the Jews. Says, but now is my kingdom not from here. Pilate therefore said unto him, are you a king? Then?
[01:09:51] Then Jesus said unto him, you say that I am a king, Says, to this end was I born. It says, and for this cause came I unto this world that I should bear witness unto the truth. Says everyone that is of the truth hears my voice, says everyone that is of the truth. Yes, but it says, to this end was I born.
[01:10:12] Says, and for this purpose, for this cause I have come into this world. Says, I have come into this world for this purpose. I've come into this world, for this cause, to this end was I born. Yeah. Says, to this end was I born.
[01:10:28] And for this purpose he knew who he was. He was never perturbed. Even when he was going through the trial, he was on top. He knew who he was. He never denied who he was. Says to this. And he knew his purpose. Oh, glory to God. Says to this end, Was I born. Says, I have come into this world for this cause, that I should bear witness. I should bear witness unto the truth. Says, I came into this world. I should bear witness unto this truth.
[01:10:59] Says, and they that are of the truth says, they hear my voice. They that are of the truth, they hear my voice.
[01:11:08] Then Pilate said unto him, what is truth?
[01:11:15] Oh, my goodness.
[01:11:19] Pilate. What is this guy talking about?
[01:11:23] Says, what is truth?
[01:11:25] And when he had said this, and when Pilate had said this, he went out again unto the Jews and said unto them, I find no fault in him at all.
[01:11:36] I find in him no fault at all.
[01:11:40] Ayah Says, I find no fault in him at all.
[01:11:45] Oh, glory.
[01:11:49] Okay. Says to this end was I born. Hallelujah. Says, I have come into this world for this cause. Hey.
[01:11:57] I have come into this world for this cause.
[01:12:02] Says, to this end was I born.
[01:12:06] Hey, can you speak like that? Can you communicate? Can you speak like Jesus? To this end was I born. That I may bear witness.
[01:12:14] That I may bear witness unto the truth. Anyone that is of the truth hears my voice.
[01:12:23] If you're a child of God, if you're born again, if you're born of the word, it says, being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible by the word of God, by the word of truth which lives and abides forever.
[01:12:35] So you can boldly claim and say, to this end was I born, that I might bear witness unto the truth. That I may bear witness unto the truth. I was born to bear witness unto the truth. Were you born to bear witness unto the truth?
[01:12:54] Hey, I was born to bear witness unto the truth. To this end was I born. Kaya. Yay.
[01:13:07] Okay, so now, in closing, we're going to look. Let's shut this down. Let's shut the trial down. So now we've looked at Jesus before the political leaders, and his response. He says that you say that I'm a king. To this end was I born.
[01:13:23] Everyone that is of the truth hears my voice. So he was tried by Pontius Pilate and the political authorities.
[01:13:33] Okay, and then now. Because now Pontius Pilate was like, I have a custom.
[01:13:38] They took him to Herod as well. Herod found no fault in him. And they were like, hey, we find no fault in this man. We find no fault in this man.
[01:13:46] Okay? And then now he's like, okay, maybe let me deliver. Let the people decide. Let the people try him. So now Pilate now brings Jesus for the people to not try him. Okay? So now the third Group of the people. The third group of authorities that tried Jesus was the authority of the people of the nation of Israel. The people, the multitude themselves. Okay, so when it reads says, I find no fault in him. This is also in John. So we'll continue with John going into John 18, going into verse 39. As we look at John's account, John's account of Pilate delivering Jesus to be tried by the people.
[01:14:33] Okay? Verse 39. But you have a custom that I should release unto you one of one at the Passover. So they are. This custom says, will you therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews.
[01:14:46] All right, verse 40.
[01:14:48] Then cried they all against saying, not this man, but Barabbas.
[01:14:56] Now, Barabbas was a robber.
[01:15:01] Barabbas was a notorious criminal. He was a notorious robber. He was a robber.
[01:15:08] Okay, we'll get into Barabbas story a bit later. Okay, let's look at Matthew's account, okay? Of Jesus being dried by the people.
[01:15:17] Okay? Because Pilate was like, I find no fault. Herod was like, I find no fault. Right? The religious leader said, he must be put to death. Now they bring him to Pilate. Pilate is like, okay, I'm going to let you decide now. The people, the nation of Israel now has to decide Jesus's fate. Okay? And then he says, I have a custom.
[01:15:38] Let me even help you so that. To save yourself, so that the man can go free. They were like, we don't want this one. We want Barabbas. We want parapast wickedness.
[01:15:49] Okay, so Matthew's account. Okay, can we do Matthew's account or should we do marks?
[01:15:59] Okay, let's just. Yeah, let's do Matthew's account and we'll do marks and.
[01:16:04] And we'll see if we. We've got enough time to do Luke's account. Glory to God. Okay, Matthew 27 from verse 15 to 26.
[01:16:12] Now, at the feast of the governor, at the feast of the governor was accustomed to release unto the people a prisoner whom they desired. And they had then a notable prisoner. A notable prisoner. They had then a notable. He was a notorious prisoner.
[01:16:27] So they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. A notorious prisoner was called Barabbas.
[01:16:33] Therefore, when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, whom will you let that I release unto you Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?
[01:16:42] Verse 18. For I knew that for envy they had delivered him. Hey.
[01:16:48] Okay, this is the governor. This is. Pilate says, for I knew that for envy they had delivered him.
[01:16:53] So Pilate was even Trying to make way for Jesus to be, you know, to be let go.
[01:17:00] So he made it like he gave them the best offers. Like, I've got this notorious.
[01:17:04] So Pilate is like, there is no way.
[01:17:07] There is no way they're going to allow for me to release Barabbas. All right? I heard of Jesus whom this called Christ. Okay? So he was like, okay, let me try this one. Maybe the people will be like, ah, okay, if it comes to Barabbas. Nah, it's fine. Give us Jesus. Okay. But even at that.
[01:17:30] Okay, let's finish. It says, for Pilate knew that for envy they had delivered him. Verse 19 says, when he was sat down on the judgment seat, this is Pilate. His wife sent unto him, saying, have nothing to do with this just man says, have nothing to do with this just man. For I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
[01:17:52] But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask for Barabbas and to destroy Jesus. So now Pilate is saying that I want to let the people decide. Now the chief priests come, and they are doubling, tripling down and now provoking the people, telling the people, tell him that we want Barabbas.
[01:18:13] You see how wicked these people had become?
[01:18:16] Oh, yeah.
[01:18:18] Verse 21. Then the governor answered and said unto them, which of the two will you that I release unto you? They said, barabbas. Barabbas. Now, Barabbas means son of the Father, okay? So now there's the son of the Father, all right? And then we have here the son of God, who's also the son of man, who's also the son of the Father. So there are two sons here. One is what? One is sinless, all right?
[01:18:45] And one is guilty. This is substitution taking place. This is the gospel of substitution taking place.
[01:18:51] Okay, so now instead. So they. So, so instead of the nation of Israel.
[01:18:59] Instead of the nation of Israel, okay, Releasing an innocent man, okay? They said that, you know what?
[01:19:09] An innocent man must take Barabbas place. Must take the worst murderer's place. This is the gospel of substitution being played out here.
[01:19:19] The gospel of substitution.
[01:19:21] The man the worst sinner in the land. They said Barabbas was a notable criminal. He was a notable sinner. He was the worst criminal in the land.
[01:19:32] He was the worst criminal.
[01:19:35] And they had an opportunity to either to release the innocent man or to release the worst murderer in the land. The worst criminal that the land had ever seen. Barabbas was the worst murderer. He was the worst criminal. He was a notable murderer. He was a notable criminal. He wasn't an ordinary criminal. And Pilate thought that there's no way they will let Barabbas go.
[01:20:04] But the chief priests, they started to tell the people, tell him, all right, this is your opportunity. Tell him to release Barabbas unto you. And then that substitution took place.
[01:20:16] To condemn an innocent man and let go of the guilty, okay? Which is a story of me and you, of how Jesus now took our place.
[01:20:31] Each and every single one of us represent Barabbas.
[01:20:38] So instead of Barabbas going to be crucified with the other two, now Jesus, he says, I was numbered with the transgressors.
[01:20:48] That prophecy has to be fulfilled, that he was numbered with the transgressors. So now Barabbas represents the nation of Israel, all of them, the nation of Israel. Sinners, murderers, all of us in our sin.
[01:21:02] And then Jesus now takes our place.
[01:21:06] Jesus now takes the place of Barabbas, the worst sinner, the most notorious sinner, the most notorious murderer.
[01:21:15] Jesus now takes his place as a substitute.
[01:21:20] And they don't know that this is what God is doing.
[01:21:25] Making him who knew no sin to be seen for us to be seen for who? For Barabbas.
[01:21:34] Him who knew no sin took the place of Barabbas, who was the worst sinner, the most notable sinner.
[01:21:43] So the gospel was playing out. They were. They were involved in the trial, the multitude, the people, the nation of Israel was involved in making the this judgment, this trial, this judgment to condemn Jesus to death and let the most notable sinner, the most wickedest evil man in the land, to go free.
[01:22:09] Okay, let's finish it.
[01:22:15] Pilate said unto them, what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ? They all said, let him. They all said, let him be crucified.
[01:22:26] Verse 23. And the governor said, why, what evil has he done?
[01:22:31] But they cried out the more, saying, let him be crucified. Crucify him. Crucify him. Crucify him.
[01:22:38] Yeah.
[01:22:40] When Pilate saw that he could gain nothing but that rather a tumult was made, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person. I am innocent of the blood of this just person. This is Pilate.
[01:23:01] See you to it. Says, you now decide.
[01:23:05] Okay.
[01:23:06] Then answered all the people and said, he's the people. This is the people. I told you. Now the people also tried him.
[01:23:15] So Jesus was tried by three authorities.
[01:23:21] The religious authority, the political authority, and the authority of the people, the nation of Israel, the people, the multitude of the people of Israel then answered all the people and said, his blood be on us and our children.
[01:23:45] Then released he Barabbas unto them. And when they had scourged Jesus, he delivered to him to be crucified. They beat him, they lashed him. Okay, can we.
[01:24:01] We will look at.
[01:24:05] We will close with that. And we'll look at Mark's account, and we'll look at Luke's account. We'll probably look at it when we look at the crucifixion as we bring in the context of the trial into the crucifixion. Tomorrow we'll cut it here so that this doesn't get too long. But you see now, this is what happened with Jesus. This is what happened at the trial of Jesus. He was tried by three or four authorities, okay? That authority of the religious leaders, okay? The religious authorities. It was also tried and tried and condemned by the religious leaders. And it was also tried and subsequently condemned, okay, by the political leaders who gave authority to now the leaders of the people, the authority of the people of Israel to now decide on the fate of Jesus, bringing the three groups of authority that tried Jesus for him to be crucified. Glory to God. I'm gonna cut it here. We're gonna stop it here. I trust that you've been blessed. My name is Shingi. I love you. God bless you. And remember that this is your time. And tomorrow we're going to the crucifixion. Don't miss it. Don't miss it. You trust, truly be blessed. I love you. God bless you. And I'll see you tomorrow, Sam.
